Kapamsay & Saura canyons
Shady gorges with trees and a spring-fed lake — coolness in the middle of the desert.
Kapamsay is the deep bed of a dried-up river between pale cliffs. Trees grow on the bottom, and in a large grotto rainwater has broken through the vault, growing a small grove beneath it.
Saura Canyon opens to the Caspian. It has a freshwater spring and a small lake with turtles — a rarity in arid Mangystau. Next to Kapamsay are the rock-cut Shakpak-Ata mosque and Shakpaktysay canyon.
