The underground mosques of Mangystau

Beket-Ata, Shopan-Ata and other holy places carved into the rock.

Mangystau is called the land of three hundred and sixty saints. Its underground mosques are cut right into the rock; many are still active and welcome pilgrims.

Beket-Ata is associated with Beket Myrzagululy, an 18th-century Sufi teacher — one of the most revered places in Kazakhstan. Shopan-Ata is an ancient necropolis with a rock-cut mosque. Our routes also include smaller mosques on the way — Karaman-Ata and Shakpak-Ata.
